Eagle Lake is situated just west of the town of South River, ON, in the highlands of Almaguin County. With lots of greenery and very low light pollution, it offers a true north experience. No one knows exactly how long Eagle Lake has been here, but according to local historian, Marion Morris, Algonquin natives were the first inhabitants of the Mikisew Park area. They had traveled a long established canoe route from Georgian Bay to Lake Nipissing and from Deer Lake up the Distress River to Eagle Lake. Translated from the language of the Algonquins, Mikisew means ‘Golden Eagle’. Eagle Lake is a head lake and is at the beginning of the waterway system and is not fed by nearby rivers or streams.
Varying depths of the lake makes for great fishing year round. Natives species to the lake include brook trout, lake trout, whitefish, brown bullhead, white sucker and the smelt. Specific programs to stock the lake with rainbow trout, walleye, yellow perch, and smallmouth bass have been undertaken over time. Northern Pike were also introduced to the lake a few years ago. The lake is home to at least three sets of loons, snapping turtles, many families of duck, otters, deer, bald eagles, osprey and over 90 other species of birds. Black bears are also frequently spotted in the area. Lake and the surrounding community are home to many species of stunning flora and there are several nature and hiking trails to explore.
